Disappointing people feels lousy. So be upfront about it.

If you’re like me, you hate saying no and letting people down. Instead, I overextend myself, say yes to things I shouldn’t say yes to, then struggle to deliver on-time, quality work. That problem extends to my professional, personal, and family life, and its impact is equally large across all of them.

So, disappoint people on the front end by saying, “No.” Be honest (with yourself and others) about what you can and can’t do.

If people know upfront that you can’t do something, they can make other arrangements, and that’s a lot easier for everyone than being disappointed on the back end.
